O mioma (leiomioma) uterino é um tumor benigno que acomete as mulheres (até 60-70% das mulheres com 50 anos apresentam miomas) ao longo da vida. Trata-se tumor sólido e benigno constituído por células musculares lisas.
Existem diversas opções de tratamento para os miomas uterinos sintomáticos, desde o uso de medicações até a retirada cirúrgica dos miomas (miomectomia) ou de todo o útero (histerectomia).
A embolização de miomas uterinos é realizada em todo o mundo desde os anos 90, substituindo a retirada do útero em pacientes que desejam manter a possibilidade de gestação.
